Robert Kushen joined Porticus in 2016. He has been active in the areas of international law, human rights, and health and development for over 25 years. For fifteen years, he served in various capacities at the Open Society Foundations, including as Director of International Operations. Prior to joining the Open Society Foundations, Robert has been a senior manager in several human rights and health and development organisations: Executive Director of the European Roma Rights Centre; Executive Director of the Harvard PEPFAR Program, which provided treatment services to 100,000 persons infected with HIV/AIDS in Africa; and Executive Director of Doctors of the World. Before that, he was an attorney/adviser in the US Department of State, where he served as counsel to the bureau of counterterrorism, liaison to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, and as an expert in international environmental law. He began his career as a Fellow at Human Rights Watch, reporting on human rights abuses in the Soviet Union. Robert has a JD from Columbia Law School and a Bachelor of Arts in Russian and Soviet Studies from Harvard College.
