Living Forests

Supporting partners and local communities protect, restore and manage forests.

Why it matters

Our shared ecosystem needs healthy forests to capture and store carbon, and to maintain biodiversity. The first people to benefit must be the local communities whose lives and economies depend on sustainable forests to sustain themselves.

Forests are the perfect illustration of the climate challenge and the opportunity. More than 10% of carbon emissions come from logging and deforestation. Yet, when managed well, forests are one of our most powerful carbon sinks providing up to a third of the climate solution.

What we do

We support local partners on three fronts: protection, restoration, and management.

  • Protection is about creating a different kind of forestry economy – one where trees are more valuable standing than cut down.

  • Restoration is about reversing damage – reforesting degraded land and rebuilding the surrounding economies.

  • Management is about working with the forests, not against them. Used wisely, forests can supply the raw materials for a more sustainable future, while also acting as the lungs of our planet.

Where we work

We prioritise our work with partners in the Amazon, Congo, and Indonesia.
